There is nothing better than a road trip with your puppers-snacks and music and bluebird sunny days. Traveling with your pup adds to the fun; on trips with my dog, I look for opportunities to stop more often and stretch our legs, play by a river and maybe have a picnic! It changes the dynamic, I don’t want to just get from point A to B, I want to enjoy the ride and the time I am able to spend with my pup!
We at Bow Wow love to road trip with our dogs, so we thought we would craft some ideas for excellent road trips for summer adventures…places to stay and things to do for both you and your furry BFF”s!
Heard of Salida, CO?! If not, read on because it is a gem of a town with something for everyone, biking, hiking, delicious food, a fantastic river walk and great spaces to hang with your pup!
Places to stay
There are a few hotels that allow dogs and there is also great camping in the area but we thought we would look at Airbnb type places so your pup has a couch to chill on while you are on your rafting trip down Brown’s Canyon! These rentals are the ones we have found that get great ratings and we think are the most dog friendly with no weight or age restrictions, excessive fees or restrictions such as crating.
Simple Lodge & Hostel-An awesome space right in the downtown. Ask about their studio, it has a small tidy kitchen and a great back deck!
Adorable A–Offers a fenced yard for your pup.
Glamping-A fantastic cabin that backs up to National Forest
Dog Friendly Decks
Due to health codes in Colorado, you cannot take dogs into a restaurant that serves food but you can bring them onto decks or into establishments that have food trucks serving food rather than an in-house kitchen!
Moonlight Pizza-Yummmm, great food, drinks and water bowls for the dogs!
Little Red Hen Bakery-unbelievable bakery, they grind their own wheat! Nice deck with umbrellas for shade
Mo Burrito-Vegan, vegetarian or meat eater, you can’t go wrong here! They also offer a delicious beer selection and best of all, a covered deck that welcomes dogs.
Things to do with your Pup
Salida is a Puppers Wonderland, there is wonderful hiking all around the town, and a great river trail you can amble along. If your dog is up for a bike ride, riding trails abound as well. There is a great farmers market in beautiful Alpine Park on Saturday mornings and just about any time of day, you can grab a coffee and watch hotdog boaters at the kayaking park!
Have you been to Salida?! Did you take your dog?! If so, how did it go? Let us know what was great and what wasn’t so great!
